MSCCN's Deb Kloeppel Met with Mrs. Becky Gates

Deb Kloeppel and Mrs. Becky Gates, wife of Secretary of Defense
Robert Gates, met for an informal, private one-on-one breakfast on
Saturday, August 22 to discuss military spouse employment issues
and career management. "Mrs. Gates and I are kindred spirits
concerning employment, vocational training, and job placement
opportunities for the military spouse and military community at
large. You see, since Mrs. Gates was a college career counselor
for 28 years, the conversation flowed like electricity - and we're
definitely on the same wave length regarding the passion we hold
for job opportunities and job placement of our military community
and Veterans alike. The time I spent with Mrs. Gates was a private
one-on-one opportunity of a lifetime. I'm still thrilled to have met
her. We didn't' wear make up, we didn't have protocol all over our
conversation - we were just two women talking passionately about
our military and the employment programs available to them. This
country is VERY lucky to have Secretary of Defense and Mrs. Gates
in the position they are in regarding our beloved military community,"
said Deb Kloeppel.
Kloeppels Visit King Ranch

Tio and Janell Kleberg, shareholders in King Ranch, a private family
business in Kingsville, Texas invited Dan and Deb Kloeppel to stay on
the ranch for several days. "The visit was fabulous" said Deb. "King
Ranch is one of the largest private family owned ranches in the United
States. Tio (Kleberg) gave us a personal tour of this magnificent ranch.
Everyone should know about King Ranch if they care about our nation's
history. Janell Kleberg, former military spouse, wrote a wonderful book,
Waiting for Daylight. If you have a guy in your life, I highly recommend
this book. The book brings out the inner cowboy and cowgirl in everyone...
no matter how citified you might be."
Tio Kleberg served proudly in the U.S. Army and remains a staunch
supporter of the U.S. military.

MSCCN Attends the Beyond Tribute Launch on 21 May 2009
Beyond Tribute's mission is to redefine the future of the Memorial
and Veterans Day holidays by engaging the American business
community and its customers in a national campaign. They are
partnering with major retailers raising charitable dollars to
benefit those who are struggling with the wounds of war, including
the invisible wounds: post traumatic stress disorder, traumatic
brain injury and combat-induced anxiety and depression. In other
words, they are asking for a call to action partnered with honor
for all who have served.

Press conference participants included Dr. Jill Bidden, wife of Vice
President Joe Bidden; U.S Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA), chairman of the
House Committee on Veterans' Affairs; Georgia Carter-Krell, national
president of the American Gold Star Mothers, INC; Iraq war veteran
Sgt Charles Eggleston and his wife Pamela (pictured above), and
General Wesley Clark, former presidential candidate and former
Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO.
Retired Sgt Eggleston, recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze
star, bravely recounted the day of his injury when hit by an IED in
Iraq. His wife Pam by his side, and military spouse extraordinaire,
eloquently spoke of their long journey navigating their struggles
through multiple surgeries and health care issues as a warrior and
family in transition. She became not only his advocate, but out of
love and necessity, his primary caregiver as well.
MSCCN proudly supports organizations that are reaching out to this
often disenfranchised part of our military family. Military spouses,
veterans, war wounded, and their caregivers are all included in our
charge and the MSCCN mission as well.

wife of General McConville, Ft. Campbell, KY.
MSCCN in conjunction with Fort Campbell’s Army Community Services and the Officers'
Spouse Club hosted an all-day event for all their military spouses. It involved the
A to Z’s in employment opportunities, job readiness, and job placement tips. 122
spouses were coached on effective interview techniques, writing a functional resume,
the pros and cons of furthering education before joining the workforce, dressing for
success and other pertinent topics that specifically addressed issues faced by military
spouses considering or seeking employment.
There was time for camaraderie, relationship building, and a relaxing surprise or two!
“Our spouses at Fort Campbell have gone through multiple deployment situations and
they’re weary,” said Marie McConville, spouse of General McConville at Ft. Campbell.
“I wanted to provide a little hope and joy if just for one day.”
Deb Kloeppel was asked to keynote on the importance of relating volunteer experience
into work skills that attract corporate job opportunities. Her presentation was titled
"From Volunteer to Career”.

the attendees gave MSCCN 92% of the highest score available. Attendees also
suggested expanding the event to two days - they wanted to hear more!

A message from Deb Kloeppel about Ft Bliss

Recently I had the pleasure to meet
Mrs. Glenda Bromberg, wife of General
Howard B. Bromberg, Fort Bliss
Commanding General. "Ft. Bliss is
truly blessed to have this remarkable
woman in their corner; she gives 100%
of herself and her services to the
betterment of military families, no
matter where she is stationed," said
Kloeppel. "Mrs. Glenda Bromberg has
such a wonderful and immediate sense
of self. She works hard to balance her
military life, kids, command structure,
and community."
The MSCCN is very particular to select only the highest caliber of character, as we select
leaders of industry, spouse initiatives, and military family programs to showcase within our
website and Military Spouse Employment Journal (MSEJ) publication: link to MSEJ.
Mrs. Glenda Bromberg exemplifies the magnificent support system that leadership couples
provide to the military families where they're assigned, and in this case, to all who call
Ft. Bliss home."
MSCCN encourages everyone to read Mrs. Bromberg's answers to three questions
we forwarded to her.

Deb Kloeppel, Keynote Speaker at "Dress to Impress"
A joint Navy and Air Force Job Strategies Seminar, Dress to Impress, was held May 18 at
the Naval Weapons Station, Charleston and its keynote speaker was MSCCN's Deb Kloeppel.
Higher education institutions from the area were on hand to provide information about their
programs. The event offered an chance for attendees to have their resumes reviewed
by professionals, as well as learn job interviewing techniques from recruiter experts.
MSCCN's Deb Kloeppel with
Linda Lankosz, Air Force Spouse Employment Director in Charleston, SC
“I told the crowd of over 100 to understand the
pecking
order of importance, regarding their resumes. Resumes
are the fifth most important document in a person’s
entire life cycle.” said Kloeppel.
“Think about that for a moment: a birth certificate, Social Security card, driver's license,
passport, and resume are the top five documents of your entire life cycle. Yet many applicants
refuse to update and revise old resumes, much less create multiple resumes outlining specific
skills for specific job types," she continued.
When developing your resume, Kloeppel suggests you think in these terms:
- Your birth certificate tells the world you’ve arrived
- Your Social Security card tells the world you're ready to work
- Your drivers license gets you to work
- Your passport allows you to work internationally
- Your resume determines the type of work you’ll obtain
AND determines how balanced your work life will be.
Why then is the resume considered homework? A resume is your employment calling card
and your ONLY chance to get your foot in the door when competing for a job you truly want
and deserve.
