Portable Careers and Alternative Work Solutions “AKA: Work-from-Home”

A changing economy and environment:

In the five years MSCCN has been working with military-affiliated applicants on their job search, there have been many paradigm shifts.  The high military operational tempo encouraged military-affiliated applicants to explore portable careers as an employment option.  The recent economic shift has military-affiliated applicants exploring all alternative work solutions as traditional jobs disappear.  In the past year, MSCCN has been asked to educate applicants on alternatives to traditional work.  The information presented in this section is not to encourage a specific opportunity or position - it is to simply advise website visitors on the portable career options available.  Hopefully, the information presented will help you understand your options and make the decision if this is right for you.

Entrepreneur Focus

Work-from-Home and Portable Careers:

There are many options available for you to work from home.  For simplicity we will explain the three main categories of employment from home and where you can obtain more information on work-from-home and portable careers.

Home Company Agents:

Have a position working for a company from a home office. The position will usually require set hours, tasks, and equipment that you may have to provide. (Examples: customer service, IT, scheduling, etc.)

Independent Contracting:

An employment contractually agreed upon with another party on work that you will provide for a fee. (Examples: real estate agent, consulting, writing, cleaning, etc.)

Home-Based Business:

A business operated from home.  (Examples: multilevel marketing, virtual assistants, jewelry making, quilting, and etc.)

Warning:

While working from home is a personal choice and a great option for some there are risks involved.  Work-from-home positions may require you to provide equipment to perform the service and background checks, plus business opportunities usually require initial investments for products.  Be sure to research all opportunities and be clear about the cost of starting and running a business prior to investing.  Questions to ask up front include: what am I paying for, what are my monthly obligations, and how will I receive payments for service performed.  While MSCCN will try to investigate and ensure all of the opportunities are valid and information is accurate, we cannot guarantee information will fit specific legal considerations in your location and desired work situation.

MSCCN Employers for Home-Based Businesses

Full and part-time work-at-home positions are available with three corporate partners. Employees handle inbound customer service calls - take orders, answer questions, address complaints or problems, and provide information about additional services.

Theese employers represent a variety of companies that outsource their customer service function to our partner organizations, Convergys, Alpine Access, and Cloud 10. We currently have spouses who work for our partners but represent companies like Direct TV, 1-800-Flowers, BoFlex, ProActive etc.

Our first partner, Convergys, offered work from jome jobs starting in November, 2008. Alpine Access and Cloud 10 joined MSCCN after the first of the year, 2009. The pay for these work-at-home positions starts at $7.50-$9.00 an hour. Convergys and Alpine Access also offer benefits to their employees. The flexibility, cost savings (clothes, gas, and lunches), and benefits of working at home are very attractive to many applicants.

Applicants interested in applying should search the MSCCN job listings in the state where they reside to check which companies are hiring candidates. They need to follow the instructions on the job posting and apply directly to the company website so they can take the computer test and complete the application process.

Spouses must identify their source as MSCCN so company recruiters know they are a military-affiliated applicant. They should also keep an eye on their email and respond promptly to recruiters when emails are received. All three organizations are swamped with applicants and although they are trying to give military applicants extra consideration, applicants must be as responsive as possible to ensure they complete the process to be offered a position.

We suggest that all applicants visit the website of the organization they are applying to and review the equipment necessary to work for each organization (computer requirements, internet access speed, headsets), as well as reviewing the FAQs on each website. Then go to the MSCCN Gateway at http://msccn.org/jobseekers.php. If you have questions contact askus@msccn.org.

MSCCN and Virtual Training Systems™ have partnered to assist military spouses, family members, war wounded and caregivers, and veterans to become professional corporate work-from-home Customer Service Agents. We suggest that everyone interested in working from home take this FREE training. Once you finish it, you will know if you are well suited for a work-from-home job and if so, you will have certification as a work-from-home Customer Service Agent. Details are found here.
